Playaz are starting the New Year with the best that Drum and Bass can offer by bringing you the long awaited Bi Polar EP from Playaz veteran Sub Zero. Stepping outside musical boundaries and shattering any illusions that his production style is nothing more than ferocious jump up, Sub Zero’s creativity has grown and developed within the Bi Polar EP highlighting his envious skills at producing timeless Drum and Bass.
Each of the six tracks takes you on a journey through the spectrum of D&B, displaying varying styles from calm and collected liquid to his trade mark rolling beats which have received critical acclaim from those DJs who were lucky enough to get their hands on exclusive copies.

The powerful Why Can’t You See, a collaboration with up and coming producer Supreme Being and featuring the vocal delights of Grimm, captivates the listener with the opening dramatic milieu before launching full throttle into a vocal laden dance floor smasher. Protection and Broken Me both demonstrate a hauntingly beautiful style of production, stripped back to a smooth rolling beat and infusing passionate vocals.
Your Flex and Run N Hide revert back to Sub Zero’s signature bouncy kick beat making them certified club classics from the outset. These dark and animated rollers add a lively tempo to the Bi Polar EP and complete the musical antithesis. The Jungle inspired Clash only further adds to the juxtaposition of heavy and liquid Drum and Bass which makes it exactly that: the Bi Polar EP.

Crystal Clear caught up with Kmag to talk about his latest collaboration with Zen, Heavy VIP/ Bullet. You can read the full interview here.

Crystal Clear and Zen are back with the VIP re-rub to dancefloor smasher Heavy. Backed with the warm, vocal-rich Bullet, the release is sure to cause waves across the drum & bass spectrum. We caught up with Crystal Clear to talk releases and labels.

So you’ve just released Heavy VIP/Bullet – tell us a bit about the release and how the tunes came about.

Bullet started with the vocal really – I came up with the vocal hook and put a basic version of the tune down and then we got our mate Everton (who also voiced Heavy) to revocal it. From there we built the rest of the tune around it. We wanted it to be a rugged dancefloor thing but with a thick, warm, resonating bassline. We tested it out a few times and instantly had people like Marky on our case for it, so with that and the crowd reaction we knew the tune worked. We let the original Heavy run its course for a good six months before we decided to go back for a cheeky little revamp. We were really happy with the reception the original got so we thought it was right to give it a go. We didn’t want the VIP to be exactly like the original but I think any VIP/Remix should at least have an essence of the original sound/feel.

Hit The Floor magazine caught up with Hype in an exclusive interview just after Christmas. Below is a section but you can read it in full here.

Hit The Floor are proud to be in the presence of greatness. DJ Hype has, for the past twenty years, been at the vanguard of drum & bass, and, by extension, underground dance music as a whole. Leading the way with classics such as‘Closer To God’ and ‘Supa Sharp Shooter’, his various labels, including the iconic Playaz, have consistently delivered the goods. His tireless live efforts have seen him play all over the world. He returns to Innovation at the Fire Complex in London this New Year’s Eve. We chatted to Hype about his career, highlights of this year, and what to expect at Inno NYE…

HTF: Hi Hype, how are you? Where in the world are you right now?
H: I’m writing this in London just before flying out to the USA for a mini tour.

HTF: How has the last year been for you?
H: It’s been another great year spreading drum and bass around the globe!

HTF: You are, for many many people, a legend in the music business. What do you put your success down to, and why do you think you, as a DJ and the labels you run, mean so much for so many people?
H: I work hard and have a big passion for what I do and I aint a bad DJ either! Hahaha! I’m flattered that people love what I do but you need to ask them why they like me and my music. I’m just happy they like me as I love them too!

HTF: We’re talking Innovation New Year’s Eve. Innovation has been massive in the party scene for a long time. Tell us about your Innovation experiences. Any particular dates stand out?
H: My fav has to be Innovation In The Sun over in Spain. It gets bigger every year and the ‘Playaz’ night there is always a great night.

It’s been a great year at the Playaz camp with some of our finest releases dominating the airwaves over the past 12 months demonstrating the mighty production talent that we have. As well as our resident label DJs, we’d like to thank the other artists whose tunes have to maintain our reputation of delivering top quality Drum and Bass.

A massive thank you to everyone for all of their support this year, to Fabric for hosting our award winning Playaz nights, the DJs and radio stations who played our tracks, the magazines and blogs who covered our releases and most importantly all of our fans who’ve supported the label.

As one year ends, don’t be under the impression that 2011 has been our biggest year, the best is yet to come! We’ve got a plethora of music to be releases starting with Sub Zero’s EP and Taxman’s debut full length album. We’re also glad to announce the return of our Playaz Nights worldwide in the New Year helping us to achieve global domination and reaching out to our fans who aren’t UK based.

So once again, thank you to one and all and a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

Hype and Pascal

Data Transmission reviewed the Flavours Vol 2 EP recently, a section of the review is below but you can read it in full here.

Playaz takes on a new vibe for one of their best releases this year. The first three tunes see an excellent reggae/dub influence whilst the second half takes control with some calmer tracks. Both Netsky and Sub Zero enjoy some of their best released work on this EP. Opening on the strongest track on the release, surprisingly Netsky’s ‘Tomorrow’s Another Day VIP’ provides a dubby, sparking compliment to the rest of the EP. A simple captivating synth-line combined with catchy reggae-style vocals introduces the track into a strong drop that is very different to Netsky’s usual production and much more in line with typical Playaz feel. High pitched samples and a beavering sub bass allow this tune to be double dropped with a large proportion of d&b releases. An excellent display of Netsky’s versatility as a producer.

Recharged Magazine reviewed Crystal Clear & Zen’s mighty Heavy VIP/Bullet release. Below is a section but you can read it in full here.

Heavy has been a staple ingredient of D&B sets for a while now, so most of you reading this don’t need me to bang on about it. The distinctive vocal sample gives it a recognisability that has elevated it to anthem status. It’s straight up, stripped down, skankers music, that’s all about the bouncing bassline and driving percussion, backed up by rising inflections of a subtle atmospheric sounds that keeps the energy at optimum levels.

Now, while the “A side” (if you can call it that when you’re dealing with digital), is clearly the bigger tune, that’s no reason to discount the other two tracks that come as part of the package. Bullet takes you down a similar path to Heavy, with gritty drums and bass weaving around a get-out-your-gun-fingers-and-sing-along vocal sample.

the Drum & Basics blog caught up with Crystal Clear and Zen to talk about their latest release and find out what makes them such an awesome musical partnership. Below is a section of the interview but you can read it in full here.

Arguably one of the biggest tracks in the DnB scene during late 2010/early 2011 was Crystal Clear & Zen’s anthem of the dance ‘Heavy’. Smashed across the board by a spectrum of DJ’s it was a Ronseal track of the highest order, and is still heard being hammered out in the clubs today. All great tracks usually receive the VIP treatment and now Ganja Records has finally released the VIP of Heavy, which paired with Bullet on the flip will add further dancefloor devastation to the masses. Drum+Basics caught up with Crystal Clear & Zen to ask them about the release and they were kind enough to answer some of our questions!

How did you guys meet and end up working together?

Zen: Myself and Andy (Crystal Clear) have worked on on quite a few projects and we’ve gone back many years from an old pirate radio station called Shadow FM probably when we were about 16.

CC: We met first in a guy called “Natty Dread’s” flat in Wandsworth in the block behind the Arndale Centre where a long since defunct pirate radio station used to be based. It was the baitest flat in the world. The door had been kicked off so many times that in the end it was just held up by placing another door up against it and wedging it against the opposite wall. I was 16 and traipsing up there to play on “Shadow FM” every Sunday…I don’t think my Mum actually knew how dodgy it was to be honest! But yeah that’s where me, Zen, Twisted Individual (or Badder G as he was known then!), Upperkut from Kool FM and a bunch of other people first met.
